Sweetners not so Sweet!

I don’t think there are many of us who aren’t aware of the dangers of processed sugar in our diet. Aside from the fact that it rots our teeth, it’s the source of a tremendous amount of excess calories that go right to where you don’t want them. I’ve been trying to eliminate (or at least cut way down) the amount of processed sugar – often disguised as high fructose corn syrup – in my diet and that of my family’s.

As far as alternative sweetners go, we’ve been going with Splenda and Stevia. Splenda, or sucralose, is found in any store and as a sweetner in many diet foods. Given all the recent research (–> read up) indicating that Splenda may be no better than saccharin or aspartame I think it’s time for Splenda to go as well.

Stevia is a natural sweetner, but we’re having a hard time with the taste. However, it is very popular with the health food crowd and I wouldn’t discourage you from trying it. The –> Stevia website has a lot of information. You can also read up on Stevia at –> Wikipedia.
